What is a nasendoscopy?
A nasendoscopy is where a doctor passes a small flexible tube, into your nostril and passes it gently backwards until it is sitting just above your voice box. This should not be painful. The tube has a bright light and a tiny camera at the end.
Before your appointment
The nasendoscopy will be conducted in your Outpatient appointment and there is no need to prepare in advance. The doctor will describe the procedure before starting and will ask for your permission to go ahead. If there is anything you do not understand please tell the doctor.
Why should I have a nasendoscopy?
This examination allows the ENT team to directly look for any abnormalities in your nasal passage and at the back of your throat which may be causing your symptoms.
What are the risks?
Some people have reported sneezing and coughing during the procedure, and extremely rarely a feeling of light-headedness, nose bleeds and spasm of the vocal cords. Any effects are temporary and should not last more than a minute or two.
Are there any alternatives?
There is no other way for your doctor to gain this level of information.
Will I feel any pain?
The tube may feel a little uncomfortable or tickle, but it should not hurt. Sometimes, if your nose is particularly narrow, the tube may be slightly more uncomfortable. If this is the case, some local anaesthetic spray can be applied around the entrance to your nose. This numbs the nose and throat, but the spray itself can give a burning sensation or bitter taste in the mouth or throat. If spray is used you need to avoid food and drink for one hour afterwards.
What happens after the procedure?
There are no special recovery instructions that you need to follow after your nasendoscopy. You will be able to discuss the results of the test and any ongoing care at the time of the appointment.
