How do I get an appointment?

You need to be referred by a GP to use our services.

Choose and book
Your practice will give you details of our services including a telephone number for you to call to arrange your appointment with us.
When you call we will often be able to give you an appointment date straight away.
There are some clinics where the consultant wants to review all referrals to either make sure the most urgent problems are seen quickest or to ensure that he/she is the best person to see you. If your referral is for one of these clinics then we will take your details over the telephone and we will contact you with an appointment date as soon as your referral has been reviewed.

Referral letter
If your practice has referred you by referral letter then we will send you an appointment letter with the first available appointment.

Dorking Practices & Holmhurst Medical Practice
The above practices have electronic access direct to our appointments system. This allows the practice secretaries to directly book their patients into most of our clinics. In those cases, you will be sent an appointment letter with the first available appointment.

Other GP practices
There are various options for practices throughout Surrey to enable them to refer into us both electronically and via standard post/fax options.

Talking Therapies (IAPT – Improving Access to Psychological Therapies)

Ultrasound
You need to be referred by a GP to use this service.

Counselling
You need to be referred by a GP to use this service. Your GP will fill in a referral form and a Counsellor will contact you with an appointment.

How do I change or cancel an appointment?

Changing an appointment
If you wish to change the date of an appointment please email appointments.dhc@nhs.netPlease email us as soon as you know you are unable to attend to ensure we have enough time to allocate the appointment to another patient. If you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment with less than 48 hours’ notice please call us on 01306 735 459 and one of our receptionists will be able to help you. Some of our consultants only come to our various sites once or twice a month and therefore there can be limited options over available dates, but we will be as flexible as possible.

Cancelling an appointment
It is important that you let us know if you no longer want your appointment or can not make your allocated appointment. You can call us on 01306 735459 and speak to one of our receptionists. Pressure on appointments is very tight and every appointment not cancelled is an appointment lost for another patient.

The average cost of an outpatient attendance at Dorking Hospital is in the region of £130. Our latest figures show, that approximately £252,000 of NHS money is wasted each year at DHC alone by patients who do not attend their appointments. This is not only a waste of NHS money but also means other patients have a longer wait for their appointments
